Not exactly new

Post by Red Kev »

Hi all, thought I'd introduce myself -- have been lurking on this forum and other VW boards for a couple of years waiting for the right splittie to come up for sale. Seen a couple come and go and was even looking to the UK and US as impatience was getting the better of me.

Thankfully, Elton's 57 11-window came up for sale -- Canberra was a lot more convenient than Leeds. Saw it posted here on DSK, a week later I'm on a plane to Canberra, loved what I saw, jumped in and drove 11 hours straight back to Coffs Harbour -- didn't miss a beat. As a previous owner of a bay and a splittie (too many years ago in the case of the split), I was anticipating, ummm, mechanical "character", but the engine is strong, the gearbox much, much sweeter than I expected and the steering nice and tight given its age. Elton's a top bloke and was thorough and honest with his assessment of the bus which made everything that much easier.

I'm in Moonee Beach about 10 minutes north of Coffs so might see some North Coast DSKers around; will definitely be heading to Old Bar and any other North Coast/sth QLD meets that are on and look forward to meeting you all. Those who live around these parts might also see me tooling around in a red Mini Moke.

Now just gotta explain the purchase of this bus to the wife, who's currently in the UK. Hoping to pick her up from the airport, stroll casually past the new bus and wait for her to say something like, "Ooooh, that's a nice kombi".

To which I reply, "Aaah, Funny you say that ..."

Hey nicely done! Try and have a friend video the wife's reaction. Looks like a really great bus 8) - well done and enjoy... if you are not slaughtered at the airport of course by a jet lagged bride.
Imagine what you would do if you knew you couldn't fail.

It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Bought a 1949 Ford Anglia to rod last time she was in the UK, so at least there's a precedent. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing ...

I once flew to melbourne and bought a 57 as well and drove home, nearly with out hiccup, quick service at mr mullers and all good...

Your new bus should bring much enjoyment, have fun

Red Kev,

Congrats on the purchase of a great looking bus, nice one.

Congrats on your purchase! (Hope the wife loves it as well).

It got a great sound to it, that 57, and sits nicely.

We are all going to miss it around the ACT, and look forward to seeing you at Old Bar.

I think you got 5 there, Ian. Share the logic, though -- maybe I should be a Liverpool fan.

Haha. I've got a cracking 180 degree view of the Pacific, have had about 5 continuous weeks of good surf, and now got a killer kombi. (Oh, and a killer wife, if she happens to be reading.:D) If barracking for woopi is all the bad karma the gods have got in store for me, I'm a happy man :D
