paint removal

Post by Roon »

Flipflop, what are you using to strip the overlaid paint off? I've got white paint on my cab roof which I'd like to remove to reveal the original turquise

Cheers

Hey roon

Depends how thick the paint is, I use graffiti remover #4 & #5 to get light stuff off with 000 grade wire wool, sometimes I use 0000 wire wool on anything with a edge. For the top layers I use Kwikstrip paint stripper, very mild, you can leave it on for 5 - 10 mins, without it going through to the metal, that's on my van which has more than enough paint to get through, yours may be a lot quicker to burn through.

Maybe you could take pics of the logos and have them put on the dove blue by a signwriter later and get a patina look.
Cheers & God Bless

I thought about that, but it's too time consuming. The upper layers of paint are rock hard and brittle, they don't seem to want to reveal the secrets, but original dove blue will suit me fine.

Thought I would do a quick update on my progress. After about 40 hrs work, it's getting there. It would be a lot quicker if I didn't work away during the week, but I'll get there eventually.

Inspiring stuff. Hard to believe it is the same bus. Great work.
Imagine what you would do if you knew you couldn't fail.

It is nearly done, you're obviously not looking from the right angle, staring hard and squinting until your eyes water while concentrating on the centre of the long panel certainly works for me.

Decided to put the front wheels on and wheel it out so I could get the rhs door top off. Put some petrol in and gave it a start just to get the oil moving, the 2180 currently in it will be making way for a 2110 with dtm while I rebuild the 2180.

The nice thing about this is, as I strip the paint I get to see all the orginal panels. The lower front valance and lower nose was nice to see in original paint, not too often you see 51 1/2 year old metal there.
