So then this just needs welded up!

Image

Had to fabricate a new piece for top of the seam on the rear quarter. I want it looking smooth.

Image

So after a long afternoon this was the result. Didn't have time to grind it all back.

Well its amazing how a couple of excuses can turn into two months of laziness. I think winter is mostly to blame!
I was driving to work on sat and saw an old splitty on the back of a trailer, and i thought to myself, that guy has a lot of work ahead of him. Then it occured to me i wasn't Robinson Crusoe either" as my dad likes to say. So tonight i forced myself out to the shed and got familiar with the grinder again!
Not a huge amount done, but its good to get back at it. I hate grinding welds, especially when they are just above the air vents.

Arty shot of the van in the shed.

The welds to be grinded.

Image

Got most of it done, still a bit to go, every step forward is an advancement.

Giddy Up Whipps....
Another 20 flapper discs should see you finished... :)

I learnt the hard way recently...The more weld build-up you create: the more you have to grind off...
Wanted..Barny bits or 60's Supercharger other than Judson

Had my brother down recently and got the B pillar tack welded with the door gaps sorted, so now that its no longer dark when i get home from work i will be getting cracking on finishing welding the roof and front nose solid. I have ordered my Rotisserie hoops this week, so ill be ready for plenty of panel work for the summer.
Going to run with this style of Rotisserie"

Well the sun is out, its daylight savings again, so no more excuses.
Finally got the side welds ground down.

Image

Then got to the B pillar on the passengers side. Had my brother help with door gaps a little while ago, and tack welded it in place, so with a slight jig it was good to go. Held in place with the Clico's

Image

front welded up, figured it was time to sort out the coachbolt seatbelt holes.

Image

All filled in now. removed the interior bracing and its really getting there now. i will weld the inside join lines for extra strength where they will be covered and out of site. Then its onto the A pillars and doglegs. Got the rottisserie on the way as well.

Picked up the Hoops for my Rotisserie tonight, had them made fairly tight as i have limited height clearance in the shed, hopefully they fit right. will get it knocked together in the next week or so and get it on its side so i can grind it all back and cut out any problems. plan is to get the bottom fixed and POR15'd then get some running gear back on!

whipps bus

Clinically insane or Trojan?
I admire your gusto, I don't think too many people would take that bus on, in it's former state. Looking forward to seeing Frankensteins bride finished.
Incredible!

Rottiserie

Right, so i got cracking on the rotisserie. bit of a photo overload coming up.
As previously mentioned i plan to build one similar to this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cRGoLKamEE

Got the hoops welded up at 2m diameter to fit in my shed, however the back one just didn't quite fit, so i had to add 100mm to the hoop.

just not quite big enough.

Image

Chopped the ring, bit of re shaping and cut a bit to extend it out. tags are to add some strenght and will be on the inside so wont effect the rollers.

welded up.

Image

mock up to get spacings and sizes. I want to keep it as low as possible, hence the smaller hoops. Ideally the hoops should be a lot bigger to adjust the centre of gravity of the bus when its in place. the shell has centre of gravity round about where the vw badge is on the front, however as space is my big issue, centre of gravity will be where it will be.

Image

Rollers bolted into base. they have heavy duty bearings inside, and should do the job nicely.

hoop in place, all fits nicely and turns smoothly.

This was as far as i got this weekend, the surf was good, so i had to go for a paddle down at Bird rock.
The bases will need to be trimmed down along the hoop line so that the gutter will roll through, but its a good start. now just to make one more, then weld up some mounting brackets and get the old girl dizzy!
