Hard Lid Design concept
I'm contemplating the construction of a hard lid for the tray of the ute, using a baywindow roof section...
Propped in place while I try to visualise the end result...
Need to have it sitting with bay window rain gutter, flush with top of gate sides..
Will cut front edge back on an angle,to allow front hinging without lid hitting back of cab..
Roof section also needs additional width to bring it over top edge of gates.
May also remove standard gate latches and use an internal drop -in pin setup...(Like a pin in a door hinge )
Earlydays yet, but hope to have this done by Valla....
First job....drill out 300 odd spot welds around rain gutter..
Pics below....Helps if you squint.... to get the full effect.

Tony, I like the idea, my 2cents worth, get another roof so you have only one weld when you widen it, cut it 1 inch above rain gutter, trim up rain gutter so it sits on outside edge of gates couple of braces accross, sit roof over the rain gutter that still has the 1 inch attached and tack weld inside, seam seal oround roof to rain gutter. this will also lower it a bit because it looks a bit too high. Great concept though. Ian

dont you have enough room in the front with you to protect things... ohhh the rain. ohhh extra passengers why dont you just add a trailer OR do what bob & ash are... buy a bay and add a extra cab
good idea... but will be very heavy
Only those whom drive a Dual Cab, Know what real driving is all about

I had a play around on Gimp and came up with this, I hope you don't mind. I think it looks fantastic. If I had a SC I would order one off you.

Hey Tonz, great minds think alike (so they say...!)
I have been thinking along the same lines for my '62 sc, except I was looking at the fibreglass lids on the holden utes with the two locking points at the back and tilting upwards from the back.
I like the clean look and they wouldn't add much weight - not sure how to deal with the tie down points, gate latches and the lip giving enough clearance so the side gates could drop down.
As I said, only thinking though as it will be a while before I get to the sc.....

No matter what happens they can't take you out in the street and shoot you......

Thanks for the feedback....
Some good ideas for sure.... (excluding Mattys overly sensitive response.. )
Time I gave you a call Ian...
Struggling to keep this as small a project as possible with minimal welding but not have it look wrong....
As far as weight goes,I drilled out 180 spotwelds tonight (another 100 to go.. ) and once partially seperated from the support frame underneath ; the roof skin is noticeably lighter...
Would consider fibreglass but like the idea of steel for its "old school" look..
Cheers Tonz

.
If you had an detachable frame attachment which had gas struts in each corner you could get a slip in canvas tent type set up which you could use as a pop up when you take it away
This would also work on DC's
Oh wait.......they're not big enough
OOps..... wrong thread
