Hey thought I'd get a thread started for my restoration project - An ex Airforce? 11 window Kombi. RHD and aussie spec.
When I dragged the thing home covered moss and lichens:
Starting to hit it with oven cleaner to get down to the original paint: (SPOT THE DIFFERENCE)...

Its got a plaque that shows tyre pressures etc. She's pretty complete so I am hoping the project won't be too huge. Gonna be needed a fair few patch panels though...

More paint stripping with oven cleaner. The grey primer wont shift with oven cleaner, stumbled on something tht might work - motorspray spray on stripper which doesn't seem to eat the original paint.
The saga continues over the weekend...

Not that I know of. Ive had it in the backyard a fair while.
I found the old army spec paint job to be pretty crap and didn't have any primer under it, not good, I guess they just stripped it then shot it in camo colours green and brown. Anyways with primer sprayed over that makes it basically impossible to keep the original paint (that's not original VW anyways) so chemical strip it is all the way down to the bare metal, gotta get some etch primer on this thing. I can shoot some flattened paint on it later to get the whole retro thing happening. Finding some rusty spots but generally she's pretty solid so I'm happy. I think someone put bitumen underneath in places which really saved it.
Well I see some patch panels in my near future.
Oh and got the old 1200 engine to turn over on the starter properly, after charging my battery and fitting proper battery cables. One cylinder has only 60 psi so not too good. Its leaking oil already and I ain't even started it!

Next step will be to check the valve clearances then recheck the compression theres a few tight ones in there hope the compression comes up...

Well back into it, ive got a 30 day plan drawn up
Cheers to Das Resto Parts and The Bus Stop for the sheetmetal parts for the chassis, there will be so many more needed to chase all the rust away.
Last wheelie bin full of rubbish happened today, so its a raw shell all ready for metal work to begin.

New chassis rail sections going in.
Working on them under the bus is super awkward, I can now see why people use rotiseree stands.

R-10 rust converter is the shit.
That is all.

Main Chassis rail repairs are finished, was very awkward working under the bus.
The R-10 converter/sealer did a great job under the cab treating some slight surface corrosion. Shes pretty solid only a few patches needed. The original paint did its job well all these years, but being an airforce bus the camo resprays really kept it in good condition.
Got my hands on some anchor anti rust primer and epoxy primer to finish the under side.
then its time to put in all these repair sections
