Is Old Bar a meet or something??!!
It is THE Aussie Kombi meet.
The Old Bar Beach Festival is held every year over the October long weekend at Old Bar near Taree on the NSW north coast.
They're spiel is that they're trying to beat the world record for the most number of Kombis in one place so there are everything from pre '54 Barnies to the latest T5 Transporters although the Splits and Bays represent the biggest turnout.
The caravan park is already booked out but there'll definitely be somewhere to park your bus and sleep over night.
A place to shower can be arranged......unless you've already had your shower for the month.
That gives you just under 6 months to get your bus sorted.
There will definitely be guys coming from Vic, all over NSW and from Qld.

Which reminds me, if you live anywhere near Sydney or can come from further away the VW Nationals are being held over next weekend.
Saturday is the Super Sprint held at Wakefield Park Raceway 10mins south of Goulburn.
Saturday night is Dino's Pizza Cruise starting at the westbound McDonalds on the M4 ending at Dinos Pizzeria at Glenmore Park.
And Sunday is the Show'n'Shine held at Fairfield Showgrounds.
Even though your bus isn't done its always great to meet up with guys who are on DSK and starting a resto.
It'll be good encouragement for you too.
Cheers & God Bless

hahaha i feel like i insulted you not knowing, haha ill be there for sure mate, im hoping to have it on the road within the month if everything runs smooth getting rid of the rust is the main thing im worried about, im going monday to get a reco'd motor and box to suit, (does anyone know about or fitted a 5 speed to a 1600 twin port? would it be worth putting 5 spd?)

and im on the Gold Coast in QLD, so wont be able to make it to VW natinals cuase ill be smashin into this badboy to get it the road haha

i have been to a few VW meets up here and there its always minimal splits then my father goes to one and i dont and its packed out with splits.

gonna be working on it tomorrow (the hubs have forgotten how to turn) so as soon as i get it rolling itll be on the trailer and and on its way home (its about 30 mins up the M1 and a pain in the arse to get motivated to drive up there and work on it) so when its hope father and i and some help should have the body work bowled over in a few weeks.

Mate, I'm not insulted.
Just informing you of the gravity of your ignorance....

Who's building your new motor?
As far as the gearbox goes the only 5 speeds out there are Porsche boxes and they're very exy, or custom Berg 5-speeds......built from VW 4-speeds; they're pricey too.
You'd be better off going IRS with a 70s Beetle tranny.
It'll cost you around $1000, maybe a bit more, and you have to find an L-Bug or Super Bug gearbox, but the car handles TONS better and has a much better cruise speed.
Think 110kmh+ instead of screaming its tits off at 90kmh.
Contact Das Dubber or Kombi Rescue here on DSK and chat with them about it.
Das Dubber is not far from you if I remember rightly.

I can forgive you this year but next year....well, you've been warned. :?

I found that a bit too but with DSK going hard core I've found people make an effort to get to as many meets as they can and there seem to be more and more Splits every time.
More to the point there is the whole range of cars.......full restos, sparkly show cars, super rats and then old but loved buses.
So don't be afraid to use you split when it's done.
People love em.

Good luck with those hubs mate.
I had an interesting time with the '55 I just found.
Check out the movie to see how a stuck hub can make moving a car...... :(

im not sure who ill get to do my motor yet have been looking though the members ride and resto sections and seen some of the great work that dasdubber has done on that formally green 11 window (i think its that same yr as mine also) so ill go down and have a chat to them as they are about 20-30 mins from my joint. and when i was in yr 10 at school (3 yrs ago now) i did a week of work experience at Gold Coast Vee Dub so ill go have a chat to them also and see what i can come up with. i will be doing the irs conversion but its a matter of when, i think better sooner then later but father says well leave it for the time being. it all depends on how much itll cost for it to be done if i can afford it now id love to do it. as for the gear box i have spoken to a few split owners at the VW meets i have been to and they all said the same thing about the L-bug and super bug gearboxs, that they fit in and work quite the treat.

and you 55 i read your thread and watched the video the other day probably last weekend maybe its great. have you started on it yet? i saw what you went through to get your wheels turning hopfully mine arnt that bad. i got the front up on jack stands today and got one spinning but the other isnt cooperating. they were fine and mooving freely about a year ago when i gave it a good clean out so a bit of moister must have seized the drums?

That all sounds like a good plan, harley.
You can hold out with the swing-axle for a while so if funds are more importantly used elsewhere then do so.
If you plan to invest in a good motor from day one that isn't a bad thing at all.
One of the guys on DSK or thesamba.com was saying he used a piece of heavy tube steel, drilled a couple of holes in it to match the stud pattern, and then used it as a lever to break frozen drums.
Mind you, if you keep filling the thing with WD40 or INOX and whacking it with a lump hammer that should eventually do the job.
Just depends on how conscientious you are.....i.e. if you're in a rush.
I only advocate the grinder if it's desperate like it was for me.
Splitty drums aren't that hard to come by but why waste good parts?
Cheers & God Bless

yeah well i was sitting there yesterday wondering what i could do and i thought about getting a like 5mm steel plate like 1m long and drilling 2 hole to going in the wheel studs and see if that gets them turning, but ill see if i can get them rolling using WD40 or RP7 or something first. ill let you know tonight how i go whether i get it rolling or not hopfully i do then i can bring it home today.
