Picked up this ratty old skool roof rack off LoBus on here, thanks mate and great to meet another fellow DSKer

so far I've given it a bath in the acid tank to get it back to metal, some custom metal work on this rack will bring it up a treat, I need to make some new legs and have some old weathered timbers to use

Think I will continue with finishing off the vents and have a play with the rack this week.....keep you posted

That's virtually the same as the rack I have for mine although I have to sort the legs.
I had them lengthened and the metal guy put solid steel rod in them to make sure they didn't bend but now the adjustment bolts won't grip them like they did the hollow tube.
I think I may just find the right width and weld them that way.

can you mark and drill the leg in the right position so the bolt won't slip?

you can also grind a slight taper onto the locking bolt so it bites in better

I was also going to make the legs from solid bar so I will let you know how I overcome that issue.

Did a bit more today on the vents

Laid in some more weld from the inside and then ground and dressed the welds off

Just a bit more tappy tappy action then some paint and refit the inner panel

I have been toying with a few more custom ideas for the front lights, still going to stick with the cross inserts on the headlights but wanted to go a little further on the internals as well so.....

due to both of the original reflectors rusting away and all of the chrome being cactus I decided to give them a sandblast and painted them up with a bit of bright chrome spray.....not happy with the outcome as they would be too dull so....

I went hunting for some shiny shit at the shops

I think the pics will tell the story, but I did make use of some of the original reflectors, they should put out some good light and I wont have any rusty problems anymore.

Just need to set up the adjustment side of it and we are away.

So for the front indicators.....

I originally thought about this idea some time ago when I was working on a Cat Grader, inside the indicators on the earlier Graders they have a steel plate that is curved and is full of 1/2" holes, must be to help throw out the light at different angles or something.

Anyway I wondered what that idea would look like in reverse with the lense on the inside, so I have to trim these down a bit as they will look like Madonna's bra or somesutch and we can't have that now can we.

Bit more setting up but you will get the picture.

BTW it took me Three months to track down a plastic orange cup the right size, I couldn't go into a shop anywhere without tring to scope out all the orange glass and plastic shit, and then today I was like...

Just one more item required to set up these babies, thrust washers from a dump truck's differential that support the side gears, they are made from brass and have a cup like shape to them, I think we may have S/H ones at work, I will have to go on the hunt

Geez, those headlight reflectors are the ducks guts.
But can you explain exactly how the collander effect will work on your indicators?
Afterall you have the "fried egg" ones which are flat.

I will only be using the last bit of the utensil holder, about 2 inches at the most probibly to have one run of holes on the side exposed def not that whole thing.

Did a little more on the front indicators this arvo

almost done now, sourced the trust washers today from the dump truck diff but they are a liitle small for the job

Maybe a clutch disc from a smaller backhoe transmission will do the job, failing that I will just have to fab somthing up.

Progress has slowed a little this week because the Golf has been overfueling and no codes

been tinkering along with the front lights

Indicators are ready to screw on and for the headlights I just need to finish off the glass and surround with the cross and that's all sorted
