New Boy with split question

Post by TIN-BITS »

Hi all new to this site and have a question.
I have a 66 split with original box and reduction hubs. I have just purchased a worked 1600 to put in it. My question is what is the simple way to get rid of the reductions and what gearbox would be the best as far as ratios etc.

Great site and great stories.

A single side plate gearbox from a '73-'79 Bug is best as the final drive is 3.88 r&p.
They're also a strong box.
Just check reverse gear is ok.
You best bet is to find a Beetle which has been front ended or is rusted beyond rego and drive it bit.
That way you get a 2nd hand motor as well.
Cheers & God Bless

Welcome Ian.
Firsly your question is not a simple yes /no answer, what you want in the end, cost, your ability to do the work, parts availabilityetc. Have a read here viewtopic.php?t=8300
Then ask more questions
