Fitting Long Wheel Stud's

Today i was working on the ute, as you probably know it has AMG rims on it, they are a real thick rim where the wheel bolts on,

now there was only 3 threads on each stud/nut holding the wheel on, this may be ok but for piece of mind i got some 'racing' (will it go any faster?) studs,

these are a whole inch longer than the standard type.

whils they were off i found some engine enamel in the shed and decided to clean up the drums, well came up a treat i tell you.

just a hint for those fitting mags to bay kombis, the front studs are longer than the back studs , so if you have spare front hubs, knock the studs out and fit them in the back hubs, that way you get an extra 8mm length on the rear, which is where the issues usually are.

what is the size of the axel nut in the above photo.............. I read it was 36mm but socket didnt fit. Calipers are stuffed at the moment!! can some one enlighten me on a possible size for a 63 DC.. Thanks

early splits and all beetles are 36 mm, late splits and bays have a 46mm nut

This from the Samba website: Large nut refers to the size of the rear axle nut and reduction box design on a 1964-67 Bus. A large nut reduction box uses a 46 mm axle nut and has a gear ratio of 1.26:1. It goes on to say that pre 64 have a 36mm nut ...but mine doesnt so I will go home and try the 46 mm socket on the nut....... Maybe someone has swapped along the way..............

Yeh mine had 46 mm nuts and they were hell to gether . Even had the back wheel spinning while I was standing on the breaker /cheater bar (1.5m) This was while all four wheels were on the ground in 1st gear and park break on with all wheels blocked!!! Got the missus to put foot hard on break and there she went very slowly at first too.
