We thought the Bus was a late 57 but as it turns out it is a Jan 58 (or so Stiftung Auto Museum tells me).
I will post pic's as they come to hand and work is completed.

Engine out, all 1200cc of her! Was looking at giving this the treatment e.g. like the Wayne Penrose engine in VW Oz Mag but will now go for a 1600 -2000 instead.

Is this your first bus?
Have your worked on a project like this before? or are you pretty new to it like me?
The Bus has now been soda blasted back to bare metal which has shown a number of evils. Rust in the usual places and some really average repairs! The cargo door repairs were that poor it is easier/cheaper to just replace.

During fix including rust treatment so it won't happen again.
Cargo floor was actually in great condition. Rust to be cut out in each corner as pictured but very solid otherwise.

I'm just wondering which 1200 build you meant?
If it was the one Wayne Penrose did that he fitted with Type 3 carbs it's a nice piece of kit.
Yep; same as the one that Wayne built. Still unsure if I shouldn't just increase in size to 1600-2000.
It is a lot of work for little in the way of HP.
I'm inclined to agree with you.
If pottering about with OG tranny and reduction hubs is your fancy a 1200cc is fine.
They're also a fun motor to tweak for early Beetles and since Beetles are lighter they're ok.
But I wouldn't fit anything less than a 1600dp to an IRS box.
The more money you have the more power you can get.
While the dollar is up there are some good turn key big bore motors that you can ship in from the US for relatively excellent prices.
Or you can get a local expert like Wayne, Steve Muller or Stan Pobjoy to build you a big capacity motor.
I run a Muller-built 1776cc in my IRS Panel and it's good but a 2.1 or 2.3 litre stroker would be even better.
