'67 Split Panel..

Post by davidr »

G'day all, first ever post here on DSK and virgin kombi owner. I have been lucky enough to score myself a nice 67 panel as a resto.

As mentioned this is my first ever bus and with no mechanical skills what so ever I'm sure I will be asking lots of questions..

I guess first thing to ask is where do I start..?? The bus is pretty straight body wise but has no motor or gear box. The engine bay has had the craddle and horns removed to make way for a bigger engine. I'm thinking I would like to get it back to standard and put a 1600 back in it. Not looking to make a speed machine. Any comments or suggestions welcomed.

Other than the engine, any suggestions as to what order I should start to tackle the resto..??

Let the journey begin..

Cheers,
Dave.

Dave,

Welcome and hope the jouney is fun. Plenty of people on this site with a lot more technical know-how than me so I will leave the advice to them.

As a fellow van owner look forward to seeing what path you take.

Good luck and enjoy :D

disc rear end, irs, rear hangers for type 4 motor?, different mount for nosecone??? i would leave most of it and run creative chassis legs and standard cradle.

has the whole rear chassis section been changed out? if so its wider than a split and gearbox mount looks like a bay one , but making it solid mounted. look for a join on the chassis or a pic of the fab work near valance mounts , good start though rust is always the big pain

Thanks for the feedback guys, but being the novice I am not really sure what it all means.. :?

Gearbox mount..?? I thought that's what the craddle was for, and thats been cut out..
Hangers and nose cone..?? I can't see those either...

Obviously I should be looking for a good mechanic..

It's gonna be a very steep learning curve..

Welcome Dave. We don't get many virgins on here. This shouldn't be an issue once you get your kombi on the road. There are lot's of really ugly blokes here that couldn't score before they bought a kombi, but are now in relationships. Buying a splitty is better than eharmony.

By the way, splitty looks good - fairly solid. All the best with it.
