Introducing 'Manfred'

Post by thebear »

Hi
Been a member for a little while but just got round to resizing images for posting. Here is Manfred, he's a 1965 and is all original with almost everything complete excluding rear seat and including plenty of rust. Front floor in usual spots, rear floor is not there and both rear quarters rusted to the battery trays.

We have two other split projects with none on the road so working out what to do with him at the moment. I'll post pics of or others soon.

Great site, cant wait to cruise.

With a bus so tiny, be careful not to tread on it accidentally...

Should only need a little work to get it on the road then.

Manfred

Post by thebear »

After a 'little' introduction some time ago, work has finally started on Manfred.

Some history. We picked him up from Cooma in August 2010 after an accidental purchase of ebay. Made the trek from the Sunshine Coast over a long weekend including a 16 hour stint that got us to Goulburn. The seller was a German bloke (named Manfred) who had quite a collection of VW's, old cars and war memorabilia. His collection was strategically placed in groupings throughout his paddock with a few splits and beetles grouped together, all with a backdrop of the white topped snowy mountains. After loading him on the trailer it was apparent that due to severe chassis damage Manfred would probably end up being a donor car for our other buses.

Apparently photos on ebay dont always tell the full story. A quickly learnt tip for new players.....

So fast forward 18 months and my wife and I have made the decision to get Manfred back on the road - specifically for Valla 2012. After visiting Valla for the first time in 2010 (in a new Tiguan) we were determined to be there in a split two years on.

Unlike most of the great resto threads on members rides on dsk, unfortunately i dont have the time or skills to handle a project myself.

Enter Das Resto Haus. We met Al and Steve at Bugs by the Bay and we were impressed not only with their work (Armandos Super Bus) but more importantly, pleasant demeanor and willingness to share information. A few emails later confirmed a trip to the Gold Coast for Manfred only to be there for the official opening late last year, to be displayed as the 'before' resto bus.

So here we are. The best part of 7 months away from Valla 2012, Manfred in the shop cut to bits and my wife and i counting the pennies to pay he bills.

Despite an electronic tutorial from Al, i couldnt get the photo bucket link working but i am hoping Al will ad a link

We've learnt a lot from dsk and met some great people and really enjoyed being a part of the friendly bunch of splitaholics. We look forward to meeting some more dskers at Valla

I hope you enjoy the ride.....

Hey that's not too bad, looks like all the ususal repairs to be done as to be expected for a paddock car.

I like the rear bench/park bench.

Good to see the Manfred thread revived Kent.

I looked back at my 'tutorial' and realised it was all spot on except for the bit where you click on the IMG code and I told you to copy (CTRL-C) it.....whereas all you have to do is left click on the IMG code and it copies automatically, then just come into dsk and paste the link (CTRL-V) (assuming non-mac user).

Eg. this is the IMG code when you hover over the thumbnail in the photobucket gallery:
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a145/ ... oroff2.jpg

Once you left click on it and then paste it into dsk, it will come up like this:

Looking forward to really sinking our teeth into Manfred - should see some pretty swift progress over coming months. Another ratty bus destined for the road :)

Cheers

LHS chassis rail seen better days. Once some of the floor had been removed it was discovered the rail was in two parts. Apparently a strong roof was contributing to it not collapsing on itself.
