Woah, I haven't done an update in a decent amount of timeâ€¦
Getting extremely close to the finish line now!
All of the interior is finished (apart from headliner - which I will do down the track), audio is all set up, windows are all in, engine is running etc etc!

I'll let the next series of videos/pictures do the talking.

I also just want to say again a huge thanks to Al and his team down at Das Resto Haus for all that they have done. I couldn't be more stoked with the outcome on how good the old girl looks! Absolute legends.

Even the seats in the bus weren't immune to the rust bug!

Some repairs will ensue after which the frames will be powdercoated and then trimmed

Nothing in this bus has been spared from the rust worm..

Nothing too exciting - Stock 1600. But shall do the job and get her moving!

More cables had to be added for the sub and speakers under the back seat

All the pop outs are painted and installed

New vintage speed exhaust on second hand 1600cc - running quite well at the moment, hopefully will last a while

Al didn't want to hack holes in the door cards or kick panels so the front speakers were mounted in steel trims inside the kick panel. The trim panel will be drilled with holes etc for an old school look and to allow sound to effectively enter the cabin.

Headunit installed as neatly as a new style head unit can be

Rear 6in speakers under rear seat (again to avoid ugly holes in kick panel)

Likewise for sub

As the original style interior wasn't really conducive to modern speakers being visible, a different approach was required

The kick panels were perforated with a punch (yep it took a long time) to allow sound out but still look neat

Audio all working! (Footage taken on a crappy 2mp still camera so sound doesn't reflect actual audio quality....but just to confirm its finally all working!)

Great looking bus, well done. I'm struggling with where to put speakers in the front of my bus, this has given me something to think about.

Have you seen RetroSound's dual voice coil speaker & adapter for Splits?

Andy, whilst there is some internal reflection of the sound (predominantly the high frequencies) and a small amount of absorption into the material, the difference in transmission of the sound with and without the kick panels on is barely audible.

Fortunately the low frequencies (bass) are less affected by obstacles (eg. rear seat) hence why having the sub stuffed under the rear seat has even less impact on sound quality.

Whilst positioning the mid bass drivers and tweeters behind the kick panels is not ideal, for a volkswagen kombi that is susceptible to road and engine noise, it doesn't have significant impact. (forgive the audiology speak - I'm fairly particular with audio given my previous career pre-vw's). I'm sure you can appreciate the same given your musical background
