im only guessing but does he leave the badge holes filled so as not to get runs in paint and then drills out later

Greg,

To see where you started from and to now see the end results is an inspiration. Your '59 reminds me of my project and yours had similar issue to my '58 which is why it caught my attention in the first place and coaxed me to read on.

What you have ended up with is great, an amazing example of a Kombi restored sympathetically back to it's former glory.
She look great!
I'm inspired by stories like this one.
