Re: 61 SO23 westfalia
Evening all
Been burning some midnight oil recently, aiming for volksfest
Installed bay window fuel tank, extended the brackets
Pulled the carbs off to tap the manifolds for the brake booster vacuum line, after reading up on it i decided to tap no. 3 & 1, theory being that if I get a vacuum leak in the line there is more chance of me noticing it if its running from two cylinders.
And finally the time came to pop the engine in, bit of reflection first
Rod Penrose built 1916cc with 44's
Love engine swaps in splittys, wheeled it straight in on the pallet jack
In like Flynn
Only modification needed was to notch the rear valance for the exhaust, pretty happy with that
And finally, she sits on the floor
LED's
Sent the bus to Mark Poole for suspension alignment, camber ,castor and toe
And yesterday drove her back for the first time , bus drives real nice, engine has plenty of torque and the brakes nearly put me out the safari and onto the expressway
This is as low as the rear red9 goes , 5inches from standard with 17inch wheels and 50 profile tyres. The front can go down another 4 inches, and has 195/45/17 tyres, I think I'll change to a 50 profile on the front too.
Still got lots of small stuff to do, handbrake ends are giving me the shits, and indicators need wiring etc etc
Looking good for volksfest now.

Re: 61 SO23 westfalia
Look lovely.
With your late bay tank install. Do you have to connect the over flow lines up and drill a little hole in the filler plate??
Splits did not have an over flow did they? Could you just block the holes.
This is one of up coming tasks. And the literature I found on it does not cover this point.

Re: 61 SO23 westfalia
Looking fantastic on the ground Andy! Very nice mate.
It is a bugger the Red9 rear doesn't go any lower (without fairly significant mods to bus and suspension)…..but if you end up slamming it, its money wasted as you'll lose most of the suspension travel and geometry, which means you'd waste a big chunk of cashola. We tell all customers who enquire about the Red9 kits if you want a slammed bus, stick with torsion bars/leaves. I'm sure you'll be pleased with the ride once you get a few miles on it and play around with the shock settings etc
Cheers
Al

Re: 61 SO23 westfalia
I think the ride height looks spot on and those rims, headlights & tail lights are awesome
