had a little play, n also on bus parts this arvo..
finally cleaned the old seals/rubbers from the door tops, the vent latch plates werent the best, so.....
out with old
difference between early n late
do the same job tho
an done..
when pullin steering box apart, the semaphore switch strap snapped, so onto making a new one.
og strap n rusty strapping
cut to size, snip, drill blah blah blah
fits well, just need a screw now, an also for the switch
now to fix the arm..

I do have these items and owe you but can you wait till after next weekend?.
The upright needs to be what colour?, as black seems to be most common.
You just chasing the latch arms left and right original?.

Re: pg/sg 55
finally got the bits back for the steering box, thanks to Tom at sunlite engineering for doin it all for me. old school guy with great knowledge..
trimmed n polished shaft
bushes to match
cut n polished bearing race
new 1/4" bearings too..
now assembly.
used grease to hold the balls in place top and bottom thanks to Simon (rusting hulk) for the "new" bearing halves. 14 balls to a side too.
installed the retainer clips top and bottom.
seated bearings in place in housing.
installed shims for end play. ended up using 3 instead of 4 because of what was taken out of the bearing face. 2 was too less and 4 was too many so 3 was just right not to have play.
new horn wire
new seal for shaft, still seals well even with the trimming.
made a new seal for the box as old one was rooted
and done!!
adjusted screw for play/no play in wheel but wont know until in the car.
mock up
cant wait till its installed now to trial the play in it.
the worm gear and peg weren't too bad so they didnt get touched, but will be interesting to see what play it has when driving.

Looks good I like the barndoor wheel. How did you get it on the column or were the early columns splined like barndoors? One day I would like to get one for the dc.

As always mate some very good quality work going on.
Hats off to you, you do things properly and I admire that in a build.
Looking forward to seeing this one done.

Re: pg/sg 55
Cheers mate, I want it to run and drive like a dream so need to spend the time getting it right the 1st time, bu I won't know how it is until it's installed and driving, but compared to what it was like prior, it's definitely an improvement. The only thing that might still need to get done is the shaft peg, it had some wear but not too bad, and to machine it down would cause a headache with trying to get it to match the worm drive again. So if that gives me grief I might look for a nos or replacement one.Ian 68 wrote:As always mate some very good quality work going on.
