Hi From Narre Warren

Post by RIV »

Hi Folks.
I am new to the Split Scene (and forums ,being an old fart , so forgive me if a stuff up protocol).
Have been shopping for a while and just purchased a 62 SC ute all complete with only a couple of small rust spots.
I have done up a few beetles many years ago (Ex mechanic)
Just wondering if anyone has "legally" modified there Split Bus/ute and obtained Engineering certificate for mods such as
1/- Lowering ( Front: flipped spindles or welded axles and Rear: swing or IRS )
2/-narrow beam
3/brakes (Discs)
4/engine.
and if so can they recommend and Engineer ?

Thanks,

Various mods can be engineered , where you located ? And welcome cool ute
Straight axle is better than IRS

Hey RIV, welcome to DSK mate

You are just around the corner from me and a few other dub nuts

Not sure about your question for an engineer but good to see you've found a nice clean split SC

Cheers, George

Hi George
I was hoping to connect with someone who had experience with getting there splitty lowered legally , and whether they needed engineering.
Seems to be many ways , but after going through the many forums, I cant find any definitive answers.
I have looked into
Flipped spindles
Relocated,welded axles
adjustable beams
wishbone front ends.

I dont need a vehicle dragging on the ground !
Hope to see a bunch of vehicles at Yarra Glen next week.
My first outing to a Dub event !

Thanks For the comments guys ,

Now Just trying to decide on straight/swing axle or IRS rear.
Finding it hard to get gearbox from a 66/67 type 3.

Does anyone know if putting a 74 bay window IRS in the splity increases the Track ?
If so ,do you need to be careful witch wheels you select ?(Offset ) so the they don't hit the guards ?

Thanks
Rex

welcome. good to see another sc. looks sweet man.

if you cut and weld in a complete torsion housing section yes it will but then you have late model gbox (if that's a good thing?)

if you use the bold/weld on irs gear then no as they cut down trailing arms.

Klaus is the man with more know what. im still a young wiper snapper.

my two bobs worth over irs and strait axle. ride quality seems same. strait axle was a hell of a lot easier and cheaper. less parts to track down. but irs allows you to leave the wheels on when you need to pull the gearbox out. i went for irs on my ute because i was going big hp motor. had i have not i would have def gone with strait axle now

Hi guys,

New to the site, and VW's as well. Currently living near Hobart, Tas but will be relocating to the Narre Warren area in a few weeks. Good to see there are a few people who share the Kombi love in the area.

hi rex,

yes have a 67 coming with me, but first I have to get my R100 across as it's already on the trailer. going to be an expensive exercise, as Spirit of Tasmania charged me around $700 last time just for the car trailer, but apparently if I was towing a caravan it would have been a few hundred cheaper, apparently something to do with the fact that caravans bring tourism to tassie or something, sounds like a rip off to me.
