67 Panel.....finally finished
Well, after 6 years of waiting and little work in all that time it now appears that my 67 Panel will finally get up and going.
My wife is due to have our third child in October.
Our current vehicle is too small now and after looking at several other alternatives we decided to put Kitty (as we named her) on the road as our family car.
I spoke to a number of people but in the end Steve Muller has been landed with the job and he dropped into my place this morning on the way to getting another car from Yass.
The funniest thing about this whole project has been people's comments when they see the panel.
When I picked it up in 2000 it was pretty straight then although there were some rusty bits.
Two grand of rust work later and there is little if nothing left.
Most of the original paint was on it when I bought it and although it was an unfinished project in a million pieces the bits were there so it's lain dormant ready for me to have the money.
The usual comment: "You've got a cracker of a splitty here."
I really think people expect to see a rust heap when they turn up.
Mind you, I guess that's what they usually do see after a phone call out of the blue.
When I told Steve how much she cost me initially he told me I'd pay the same for a good rear hatch these days.
She's already been converted to IRS and has a ball joint beam with Bay discs and drums front and rear.
I have a good rebuilt dual port 1600 from a '70 Bay that only did a few miles before the PO pulled out it when he realised the bus had terminal rust
There's also a L-Bug box.
I was given some 66 Kombi doors that need repairs where they've rusted out along the bottom but are fine otherwise.
So now it's all systems go.
I'm seriously considering safaris and although the missus was less than enthusiastic they improve airflow heaps which will be important in the panel, even with window doors.
Plus they look way cool.
And the colour.....Wehrmacht Desert Sand.
If anyone has a Rock'n'Roll bed or some Merc steel rims they're willing to part with let me know.
I'll take a few pic this arvo and post em tonight.
Meanwhile I hope to keep this up to date.

I'm sorry about this.
These pics are all about 2 years old and I really should've gone outside this arvo and taken some of her but she isn't any different from these really.
The first 2 are after I picked her up from Brian Keegan in Orange.
Brian is Peter Keegan's brother and if you don't know who Peter Keegan is you need to find out.
All true Aussie VW fans should know.
Anyhow, she had rust in the front steps, hatch door, front apron and the passenger side wheel well; the usual.
Brian fixed all that.
Here's another showing the driver's side up on ramps and stands in my garage about 2 years back.
Incidentally the white paint is the original stuff.
A PO sprayed the aqua on to make her 2-tone and I've never really liked it that much.
And here are the doors I picked up, complete with lichen.
If she was a rat looker I ask that it stay there but she won't be.
I'll try and take some more soon.

Thanks, but no thanks.67panel wrote:Nice bus mate.
Wanna buy a user name?
The first bus I owned was a 76 Camper we called Daisy.
Apart from some regretable moments she gave us some of the best times of our married life.
I always thought it was kinda cool when I first bought Kitty that I owned a 76 Camper and a 67 Panel at the same time.
Unfortunately our finances were inversely proportionate to the amount rust Daisy had.
So we sold her......on Mothers Day, and my wife cried.
Two days later we found out our cat, who'd been missing, had also been run down and killed the same day.
My wife cried even more then.
But enough "tails" of woe (sorry, couldn't resist the pun!).
Kitty shows great promise.

The panel headed to Steve's place today.
Here are a few pics.........
Here's my mate Eddie with his 2 kids and my little lads sitting in the panel.
Without him I wouldn't have got it done.
The dark red Transporter dual cab is his.
We just hitched the trailer to it to make sure the trailer didn't roll away.
Neither of us trusted the brake that much.
Incidentally, Eddie's wife had their third child yesterday, a little girl.
She was sitting in the hospital in Bowral waiting for him this morning.
He came and helped me push the panel onto the trailer before taking his kids to see their little sister for the first time.
Now THERE is a man with his priorities straight.
Here it is hitched to my Rodeo.
She was full up to the gills with parts in the tray and the panel and sluggish as an arts student on Sunday morning!
Pity we didn't leave home until 1:30pm......
Steve was out when we arrived but we got her unloaded ok.
Here you see the panel off the trailer.
You may ask......how, having a pregnant wife, did you manage to roll it off?
A good question.
The trailer was sloping away a little anyway but so was the lawn.
I figured the best way was to give the van nudge and then let her roll of the trailer on her own momentum and turn hard before hitting the neighbours shed (in the background).
That way it would come to a stop itself and sit stable.
And who was volunteered to sit in the van and steer? That's right.....my missus!!
Oh, it worked, but I lost a year or 2 off my life when I didn't think it'd turn in time.
No brakes, afterall.
We would've stopped it as it's light but it seemed awful close!
So I then unloaded all of the boxes while the boys ran around and looked at the various Kombis.
To be frank it's an amazing place.
So between now and mid September she'll be resprayed, reassembled and made turn-key to register for the new little tacker.
for all those who think that a new baby will kiss goodbye your current automotive project.........the government just raised the baby bonus to 5 grand!
Yep; 5 thousand smackers when the little tacker pops out.
All you have to do is do the MAN's job at the beginning of the nine months and hold her hand at the end of it and it's a sweet 5 gees to the project of your choice with no more effort.
And as long as my wife doesn't see this.............what's that, Darl?
No, it's just a joke......no, really, it's just a joke.......OUCH!!!!!!

Those window doors will be the daily driver doors for my panel so the rear passengers (my kids) get more light and air.crewcabconnection wrote:can I have those doors please
Mind you between the safaris and the overhead vent duct there'll be plenty of air.
For shows or camping trips with just me and the missus we'll fit the panel doors for more authenticity or privacy.
If I had another set and was sure you weren't going to butcher your panel to put window sections in it I'd hand 'em over.
Tell you what, mate, I know there's a few buses in paddocks around here and I'll see if I can find a pair.......but ONLY if you aren't going to cut yours up to put windows in it.

An update......
As this will be my daily driver and family car the missus and I decided we needed at least 3 lapsash or inertia reel belts in the back for the 3 little squirts.
For those who are familiar with the structual members of splits (or the lack of them) this will be a bit of a trick.
We're also getting Steve to fit child restraint points on the rear shelf with some serious bracing under it.
And finally, due to the considerable country driving I now do and intend to use the bus for, we're looking for a good bull bar design for the bus.
My current tally with the Rodeo is 3 roos and a wallaroo so I don't want a bloody huge skippy shaped imprint on the front of Kitty.
My Rodeo has a serious ARB bar and I still copped $1000 worth of damage from the last marsupial encounter so we're looking at a couple of designs.
If anyone else has a nice design that is hardy and attractive and isn't one of those crap "bolt the tyre onto the front" jobs let me know.
To be honest, I'm a little surprised that more people aren't looking for something appropriate.

And if the Panel was a '76, like Daisy the 76 Camper here, who was our first Kombi.......
Then maybe.
But the splitty needs a more refined jobbie i.e. something that doesn't look like it's designed to catch bulls!
