Yorkshire and Proud
How do (a colloqial greeting in Yorkshire) -just become a "member" & I'm hoping that there are hundreds of experts out there who can help me where others have failed.
My names Mick and I live in North Yorkshire (UK). After many years of wanting and praying, ive finally got myself a Splitty. Probably upset many of you but she's an Aussie import 1967 11 window Kombi with a pop top.
When I got her in October last year she still had the remnants of an old Aussie TV station logo on her - "RTN Channel 8". So far ive managed to find out that it was a TV station in Lismore NSW but does not exist anymore. Ive done a search on the web for RTN Channel 8 but get nothing. Ive sent an email to tourism at Lismore but got nothing. I,m trying to get the history of my van (hoping to get pictures of her when she was in use at RTN Channel as i'm currently doing a full resto on her (bare metal upwards). I'm hoping to find out what colour she was originally - what M code options she had, what interior - I guess she would have had a camping interior originally with her having a full length pop top.
I'm also trying to get hold of a replacement set of headlights which I believe are specialist to the Aussie market - they have wire mesh protectors on & the side lights are incorporated into the headlights in a sort of half moon shape. According to Rikki James at SSVC they are quite rare (Probably why I cannot find any anywhere in UK/Europe or USA)
I'm hoping some of you guys will get past the fact that i've "stolen" one of yours and be able to help me out
Thanks
Mick

I recon your talking about Rossi headlights, and they are plastic and not so fantastic and the mesh grill was not part of it they covered the factory lights.
Be proud and hold your chin up high when people ask where it's from (STRAYLIA), sounds very exotic.
It probably did'nt have the poptop when it was a TV van and was added later by the next owners.
To tell you the truth poptop splits are very rare here they really did'nt kick in till the bays.

please please PLEASE! put plenty of rust proofing an d paint n stuff in all the sills n corners cos vee dubs in oz, (and most other cars) were not rust proofed in any way! it was an expensive optional extra!
you only need 2 things in life, duck tape and WD40, if it moves and shouldn't - use the duck tape, if it dosen't move and should - use the WD40.

Thanks Frogsta - ive had a good look at my headlights & they are definately metal. The "half moon" shape side lights which are built into them have a plastic backing on them. If I could figure out how to post a pic I would. (Not even sure if i'm replying to you in the correct way !!)Frogsta wrote:I recon your talking about Rossi headlights, and they are plastic and not so fantastic and the mesh grill was not part of it they covered the factory lights.

How do Paul - I actually live in Ripon so I'm not far off "Darlo". Hows it hanging. You must love it over there if you've been there 40 years. I'd love to take a trip just to have a peek into the splitty scene over there but 1 big problem - I don't fly (but building up to it)paul willans wrote:how are you plenty of experts on here to help your questions (not me im only new myself) ive been here 40years my family all live in darlington and newcastle good luck paul

Don't worry man, No 1 on list of priorities is the waxoyl treatment underside & in every nook & cranny. I'm spending a small fortune on her so I don't intend to let her become rusty (moreso cos ive just had her completely sandblasted back to bare metal so theres no rust at all)vwjon wrote:please please PLEASE! put plenty of rust proofing an d paint n stuff in all the sills n corners cos vee dubs in oz, (and most other cars) were not rust proofed in any way! it was an expensive optional extra!
