A big hello to all of you in the sunshine(frozen uk forum newbie here)just a quick question for starters,if I were to come a visitin (long term)how difficult will it be to bring my uk regesterd l.h.d.splitty with me ? cant leave her behind,and i think she would love the sunshine!

Great idea to come over for a long term visit, especially if you bring more busses!

when you say you are coming to visit long term, are you planning on migrating to Australia (if do the above comments apply), or stay here for a period of say less than 5 years.
See you can come here as a temporary resident under a 457 visa. You need to be sponsored by an employer to get one. Under a 457 visa which can be granted for 1 to 4 years you can import a car temporarily, but you must re-export it when you leave.
LHD shouldn't be a problem, in fact there's 2 or 3 people on here that have just moved and imported their vans from the UK.
As far as we are concerned, all splits are welcome in Australia.

I brought my Ghia over from the UK - Hired a 40 foot container and put the Ghia, my scooter and all my worldly possessions in there. I did all of the paperwork myself - only hard part was getting car moved from dockside to holding stores for customs clearance here in Adelaide - The dockside is like a no-mans land where you're not allowed to go and only specially cleared people can go - had to admit defeat for that part and hire a local agent to do that part for me. rest was pretty easy though. The shipping company in the UK I used were very helpful. I just paid my money and delivered the stuff to the shipping companies holding stores. The Australia end might be easier for you as I'm sure someone on here can recommend an agent this end to receive the container
From memory the container was GBP 6K all up.
If you don't want the headache just get an agency to do it all for you.
You could use a 40 footer, or could go with specialised car transport company. You might also be able to get a roll on - roll off but this depends on shipping line port etc.
If your shipping your personal effects and don't hire a whole container (sole use) then your stuff will wait in their holding stores until they have filled up a container with yours and everyone else stuff - this means it takes longer to get here, and there's more chance of damage etc.
Only thing you MUST get BEFORE shipping it here is import approval from DOTARS

If you don't it can be refused entry at point of arrival, and in worst case impounded and destroyed (very very unlikely but why give yourself the headache)
It is classed as a personal import - you shouldn't have to pay duty, but you will have to pay GST (10% of declared value - the value will normally also need to be verified) if it's worth more than AU$50K then you will also need to pay luxury car tax (additional 25% I think).
One thing I would say is worth considering is this though - You may lose money by bringing here, the Aussie dollar is worth a lot less than the pound, do your homework first - check recent sales for similar splitties, here and in the UK, and factor in the shipping charges, GST and headache of getting it here - it might pay to sell in the UK and buy another here - the busses are a lot more solid (rust free busses actually exist here).
I shipped all my garage equipment and power tools over here - only to find I could buy new stuff for a lot less that it cost for me to ship them here
That said if it's your pride and joy, or you can't be parted from it....

ahh yeah - you will need to also find out about registering the bus in the state you want to move to - the registration laws differ state to state.
Eg there is no roadworthy (MOT) test here in South Australia, but there is in other states.
Also, you may have to modify things like seat belts, speedo etc to get it passed.

Hi, this is gingabloke using Cris/Snotty’s login. He’s much better with cars than he is with computers so I do the fiddly bits.
A bit of background on his Split. It’s a 1967 LHD model with special order sliding door and steel sliding sunroof – originally used by the German Bundesposte as a tv license detector van. There’s a build up thread on the SSVC forum which is worth a read.
This is it, towing his Baby Bootle, as we gathered for the cruise to last year’s Bug Jam. Next to it is my F100 towing my 58 Cal-Looker. The Split is regularly used - his kids prefer it to the Sharan that Mummy drives! Cris’ daily vehicle is a Caddy pickup with 180bhp GTi motor, LSD, coilovers etc. This gets a regular pasting as his shop truck for his business – a local garage with a sideline in VWs and other classic cars.
Cris built Baby Bootle wa-a-a-a-ay back in the early 90s and it's fully road legal (apart from not being MOT’d for a couple of years). An absolute blast to drive, it wheelies in 1st, 2nd & 3rd gears. It’s been shortened by the length of the doors plus an extra 8â€

Just got mine rego'ed yesterday so will be posting picks soon.
This was an import but a general import not a personal import and it was hassle free no complience plate or import plates needed.
Defo recommend going for the general import

if you bring your split put a small boat in it... queesland is 3/4 under water. drainage is bad up there its where all the shit flows... just like their football teams

Other states are like the UK,..... hahahaha have to disagree big style with you there, the only state simlar to the UK is Tassie saying that its been sooo friggin hot here recently, i love Qld but not for me.
