if you drive with half a brain, a stock single side plate box will do the trick. if you don't have a brain or would like to do some drag racing, what I would suggest is putting a superdiff in it and thinking about an uprated 3rd gear. this is what always goes first in VWs with EJ20ts. expect to pay about $500 bucks for a usable gearbox with the real chance that reverse needs attention...which means a rebuild. reverse is the real weakness in these boxes, it's literally the size of a 50c piece. if you're in Sydney, Schimo at Dunhams is the man to rebuild it.
You could use an 091, but I think you'll find the gearing will be too short. You'll be doing around 3500rpm (or maybe even more) on normal diameter street tyres at 100 clicks. to give you an idea, I have a taller 4th (0.77 as opposed to stock 0.82) and mine does about 2600rpm at 100km on 31" rear 4wd tyres. The lbug box is much nicer for a street car with a big torquey motor like the EJ25....mine pulls from under 1000rpm. And an Lbug box should bolt straight in once you've swapped the nose cones over. Bus boxes are a lot more work.
ah, just noticed you're in QLD. Talk to Dave Butler, aka Dangerous . He's a great gearbox builder up your way.
p.s. try and add a berg style front mount or similar if you can. the subarus are very heavy compared to a 1600 and have enough torque to really make the gearbox move around.
