Looking good Andy

What exactly are you doing after you apply Citristrip?

Just waiting really.
Then I gently use a paint scraper to get the muck off.
Once I'm satisfied I drench it with water to stop the stripper.
I tried some of the Motsenbeckers but found it, if anything, more corrosive than the Citristrip.
So now it's a case of doing the rest of the bus.
Once I've stripped as much as I dare I'll get some fine grades of steel wool and remove the last of the house paint.
Then it's wash, wax & polish, buff, more wax and more buffing.
A friend has a an excellent workshop in Sydney and it will go there in a few months time so I can learn how to do the body work.
My aim is to to get the remains of the OG paint looking good before it leaves for Sydney.
I'll post some more pics as I go.
Cheers & God Bless

Hey Andy!

Nice find! and Citristrip... hmmm must get me some of that for my '57...

The paint effect you talk about around the swage (shoulder) area is the same for mine... I have a PG/SG 1957 MB and the Palm Green colour has two layers around the swage. The top layer is very thin and found myself sanding through with 2000 wet and dry very easily. I had a light primer under mine (perhaps Sand Green even) not the traditional red, so I just went a little further through the primer and hey presto Palm Green again..

I don't know if they perhaps painted the top half, masked up for the lower half above the swage area and then painted the lower half and then painted the swage again going "Nah, that's not right" or what they did, but I did notice exactly what you are saying.. Although with yours its all Dove Blue, yes?

Thought this might help?

a 55 is well worth saving... even if you end up spending big time... Those roof sections are easily fabricated, I can't see any issue with repairing the roof... I would hate to have to do it, but I can't see issue...

Regards,
Rudolph

Thanks, Rudolph.
I'm not convinced Citristrip is the right product either.
Kuch recommended I try MrMuscle oven cleaner so I'll have a crack at that.
You lucky bugger owning a Palm Green/Sand Green bus.
That's my fave colour combo.
I really need to get my arse into gear but it's getting cold here in the Southern Tablelands, much as it does in Tassie I'd imagine, and soon we'll have heavy frosts.
It doesn't incline me to get out and do stuff on the car in rubber gloves. :(

Two tone busses were sprayed the lower colour first then the top colour was laid over the top. If you sand through palm green you should find sand green. Please believe what I said earlier about red and grey primer. I know this from sanding down my 58 to metal.

Ahh... ok... well mine has had a touch up then, at least where I am going... cos it's Palm Green, primer (or Sand Green), Palm Green and I haven't gone further ;)

Thanks for the heads up though...

I've been doing some thinking about the '55 recently, especially after I saw pics and footage of the Kempe Barndoor Panel getting about - you know, the one they dug out of the ground in Sweden.
Eventually the '55 will get a Subie but my first focus will be to get it going in standard configuration.
I may not even bother getting much of the house paint off it.
I'll blue slip and register it as is, with of course stuff like a 12v conversion, a new wiring loom and other little bits it really needs just to get on the road.
I'll fit a simple aircooled motor of some description, maybe even a 1600sp or even a 36hp, and keep the redux boxes for the mo.
Steve Muller is kindly gathering together some 2nd hand bits of old buses that'll get it running without having to blow stacks on bits and pieces.
I'll also be chucking on whatever necessary bits I need to get it blue slipped rather than going for the "final look" approach.
That means it'll run a pair of Rossi headlights I have for the moment until I can score some OG lights.
Once I get tired of tooling about in it as is I'll pull it off the road when it's registered and go hard at putting a Subie motor in it.
But for the moment I need to get the '67 going as it cooked it's motor a few weeks back and is at Kombi Rescue.
Then I can go at the '55.
I'm actually beginning to think about the '55 a LOT, even dream about it sometimes.
That's a bit of a sign; I was like this just before we got started on the '67 resto.

rossi's are fine you can put the "h4" headlights in them pretty easily.
