These tyres are space savers out of a SAAB, I am going to use them only while the car is unregistered, the old rags on my bus were CACTUS, I wouldn't use them for cruising around on but if you are up for shits and giggles these babies can be found at most wrecking yards in the boot of old European cars, they come in some other sizes also 125 - 135 etc., I picked them up for $40 each.Tonz Magonz wrote:Hi GFresh....

picked up an 1800
Hey all, I have picked up an 1800 for the old girl and have a question for you dub gurus out there, it may seem like an obvious one but I haven't come across it before, just looking at what combonation I need for my clutch set up if I am going to fit the 1800 type 4 engine into the original box, from what I have worked out so far the flywheel is slightly larger than the original so I may need to enlarge the bell housing, the ring gear has a different ratio to the original 1200 6 volt starter combo, but I have a 12 volt starter which I think has the corect pinion set up so I should be on a winner there, also do I need to change the fork on the box to get the correct throw out for my thrust bearing to pressure plate?
One other thing, if I am going to fit a straight axle swing box set up can I use the original box and fit axles off another swing axle box like a type 3, are these the correct length?.. most of my work has always been with beetles or type 3's, I've done stuff all on splits

215mm clutch flywheel which is what should have on the 1800. if that dont fit grinder out with a flapper disc . you will also need the conversion starter bush to put in the bellhousing so a 12v starter can be used , and the throw out bearing will have to be changed mmm might be able to use 1500 beetle one .
I've just done the straight axle conversion into my split and drives pretty good . i used 1500 beetle box which has the long axle long spline , short cast ends n bearing caps out of early beetle and had to extend axle tubes using the ones of the 1500 beetle box i think its 22mm? will check. you will then need to use 64 on handbrake cables with 75mm extensions into the drums which I've used type 3 wide 5 drums. And cut spring plates to match bug,type 3 springplate shape and notch springplates so they dont bottom out. Also swap out nose cone and hockey stick off your split box. there easy. Oh and reposition brake pipe brackets on axle tubes.
