DIDUMS, Great question, I believe if it welded with the correct rods and re tempered afterwards it will be all good, at the moment I am experimenting with this car to see what can be done, it wont be registered for a couple of years until I source everything for a full resto, I will just be showing it as a Rat till then, I would like to develop this type of set up for rear ends, so I supose you have to start somewhere

After some more extensive research the outcome is spring steel cannot be welded, after asking the welders brains trust at work their advice was to go with a bolt on set up so I am now going to develop a bolt in option pics to come

hey g cool shit man. I don't think spring plates are made of "spring steel" (happy to be told otherwise) they are just called that because they are connecting the torsion spring/bar to the rear hub and therefore doing a springing action but not actually flexing (well not much) so you may be ok to weld em! as I've seen plenty of other mods that involve welded factory spring plates eg, adjustable spring plate set-ups. bus looks tuff keep it up.

Thanks for the feed back J, I had initialy considered the welding option as I had also seen mods to them in this way before, mainly on the samba, here's a good link
Had a dig around the shed last night and pulled out some bits I've had laying around, think these should do a good job keeping the donk company back there.
