Liking your approach to lowering and look forward to seeing the finished product...

Wondering if you may know where I can source some 12mm x1.5 pitch high tensile set screw bolts...Need them 100mm long to bolt up my 8inch narrowed beam...

I don't think Cat do a 1.5 pitch as I looked in the one safe source book (Cat Hardware & Supplies) and couldn't see them

When you say bolt up your beam do you mean the mounting bolts? or for the adjusters?

Mate I had my brain in gear today and was thinking about your set screw request, clearly when I responded last night I was half asleep, haven't mounted an 8 inch narrowed beam yet and I stress yet, clearly it will happen at some stage because I am a twisted bugger :twisted:

so if you have a 4 " narrowed beam then you only have enough room for flat plate on the tubes and this would be mounted from the outside of the chassis, an additional 4 inches shorter would have you mounting the beam from the inside, correct me if I'm still asleep, mounting the beam in this way would require longer bolts to pick up the captive nuts from the inside hence the length you have requested, if this is the case I am thinking of something....will the captive nuts have enough strength to secure the beam now that they will being pulled away from the chassis plate as aposed to being pulled up against the chassis plate in the normal mounting position? will 100mm length give you enough to nut it from the other side to make sure it has the required strength? and if you can't get the correct pitch of 1.5 would drilling out the thread and bolting and nutting from the inside using a different pitch be an option.

what are they doing elsewhere?

Gearbox special tool and late model clutch set up

Tinkered away this week with setting up my gearbox tooling, the tool allowed me to make finer adjustments to the selector shafts while the box is all mounted up, tooling basically takes place of the case, don't know why the engineers at VW just didn't put a plate on the side of the case, also finally got to set up all of my modifications to have the early box take a late clutch, so almost ready now for mating the engine and clutch set up to the early box, looks like it should all work out at this stage. :D

Progress report

Progress Update -

have finaly got to bolting everything back in, big weekend planned next weekend, fingers crossed I will be at turn key stage

in between odds and sods I managed to give the hub caps a tidy up.

GFresh,

Apologies for the slow response... Only just spotted your reply.

The eight inch narrowed beam end plates will be bolted to the inside face of the chassis rails using the existing captive nuts. Being something of an over-engineerer I was also concerned about the threads pulling back through the chassis,so, have welded them from the inside face of the chassis to reinforce them.

100mm bolts will have enough length to allow them to be screwed in from the outside face ,leaving enough thread on the inside to pass through the beam end plate and fit a washer and nut.

Dumb as it now sounds,I was hoping to keep the chassis as un -butchered as possible to allow for future options.. :roll:

I may still decide to drill out or rethread to a more generic thread pitch if I have no success sourcing some 12mm x 1.5mm pitch bolts... :?:

Cant seem to find how others are bolting up a beam this narrow on any website... :?:

found a dealer that can supply 12 x 1.5 x 100mm high tensile bolts

they tell me that you can only get them in a box of 25 for a cost of about $80

hey tony what about putting a plate on the outside and using c/sunk bolts to hold threaded section in place so it wont pull thru, if there's enough room.

Already been there and they told me either not available or bolts were not set screw type (meaning the thread doesnt run the full length of the bolt.) Will try again though.Or will try Blackwoods in Scoresby.

If this fails, I will potentially be the only bloke in town with 12mm x 1.25mmm pitch bolts holding the beam in...( after rethreading the inserts)

Frankencab... can you draw a pic of your idea..? I,m not too good at charades...brain and imagination not working well today...sorry Appreciate the input. :D

Tonz,

If you use bolts that are not threaded all the way and you put them through from the inside, screw them all the way through to the outside and use body washers and lock nuts on the outside also this would get the job done without any mods to the chassis, and would not put any stress on the captive nuts.

then if you wanted to go back to stock set up this would be easy as.

Engine time

Had a good day today, managed to set up my clutch and couple the engine and box together, had to do a little more clearancing in the box after the clutch was on.

Got the engine and box mounted into the chassis, shed loads of work to set it up properly with tinware etc. but it's coming along nicely :wink:
