I was on nightshift last week and looking for something to fill my downtime. Steve K AKA NOS Steve picked up these NOS taillights for me when he was in Germany a few years ago when I first bought this bus (ok that was a long time ago  ).

They had been sitting on a shelf in the VW museum for god knows how long and the gold paint had worn off. I saw a guy on the samba do a how to on lens resto but couldn't do it because i couldn't find the mirror paint he was using. Recently I found a rustoleum mirror paint at bunnings so i decided to give it a crack. the idea of the mirror paint is you spray it onto glass and it looks just like silver spray paint, but from the other side of the glass it makes a proper mirror and thus is a great reflector.

This is what i started with.

Then i used thinners to remove the old paint and masked them up.

Some mirror paint and then some gold paint for that OG look.

Then a quick test of the reflection in my dark wardrobe, and it has made a huge difference.

I've added LED's to the taillight housings and if i can figure out how to post a video ill put that up. I now have taillight, brake lights and ORANGE indicators all behind the OG lenses with no need to add shitty looking motorbike indicators somewhere.

Your work is a credit to you Matt. Maybe the KF dies are a bit worn. I don't remember having quite that much trouble with them last time I put some in.

The dark wardrobe sounds like a good idea. Wish I had one. It'll really come into its own as your kid gets bigger. :(

Nowhere near as crazy as your build mate. I’ve got bigger all left to do but time has been hard to find with the kids running around.

Yeah mate, I could live with the skin mods but the inners are shit. Obviously way better than starting from scratch but I’ve found with the KF stuff its always the small parts that are the worst. Parts they would sell heaps of but still don’t bother to get right, the lower pillars were shocking too.

I’m the same. Kids take all your time. But it’s epic looking for ways to fix stuff and seeing other people’s results and wats of doing stuff. I do have a lot to do, but I’m lookin for ways to make it cost effective and hands on. I like to know that I’ve built whatever over buying or getting someone else to do it these days

Exactly Dion; to be honest, my busses have hardly been about the cars themselves. It's all about the project. Problem is I tend to get around a bit too much and there are more projects than there are hours in a day.

5 threads being updated in 24hrs? There must be a glitch in the matrix, this is just like the good old days!

So I have been working on my rear hatch. I started with this

And thanks to Brooksy I found an almost solid replacement

And then after some clean up and replacing the rusty sections with a little zinc guard on the inside to help it last....

This is how i got it nice and flush, who needs clecos?

It came up real nice with no filler.

Matt, little by little things come together. The last few posts of yours should give us all some impetus. I'll have to get busy now- long service leave for me so no excuse! Tho this time of the year it is all about cleaning up around the place!
the invisible and the non existent look very much alike!

That’s it Steve, slowly but surely. It’s a lot slower than I intended but I have other priorities these days. When does the bus get back to your place? I’m keen to come see/lend a set of hands if you need them.
