Back into splits after 10 years out

Post by DOKA Dave »

Hi there, I am new to DSK, but have owned quite a few rare splits between 20-10 years ago in a previous existence. (When a good, rust-free split was still around, and 23 window Microbuses changed hands for $15k)

Now that I have some financial freedom again, I am looking to get back into an original paint split. I have posted an ad in the wanted section.
I am aware of how much the scene has changed over the last ten years, but not too surprised that splits are now finally getting the big bucks they deserve. Maybe if Australians copped on a little sooner, we wouldn't have lost so many good splits to the UK and Japan. (I know, that's just economics)

I was kinda forced to sell my splitty's when I moved to Sydney from Canberra, where I went from a 2 car garage with a 3 car carport on the side, down to parking on the street. Anyway I really miss Splitty ownership, and after lots of years pining for one I decided to just go and find one again.

Yeah I have lots of my old 21 micro deluxe being restored, and a few pics of the other ones in my old garage in Canberra. I will try to post some pics when I get a scanner going.

The best split I was lucky enough to own and stupid enough to sell was a one owner, low miler, deceased estate, light green 62 11 window with no rust or dents anywhere. I drove out & displayed it at the 50th anniversary of the Kombi out in Penrith. I sold it (forced sale) in 2000 to a guy in Melbourne (who told me after he bought it that it was going to Hong Kong.)

The 21 is still in Sydney I think, I sold it unfinished (have heard it's still in the same state I sold it in) and I seriously doubt it's owner of the last ten years could ever be persuaded to sell it.

My first split, a rust free, straight 65 11 window was sold to a friend at the time, really nice English expat who moved to Lismore after I painted it black and off white 2k. Don't know if that was ever finished, but if anyone knows what happened to any of them I would love to know.

I posted a few pics in the pictures area, they are pretty crap cos they're pictures of pictures. I never used to take many photo's back then, so I'm amazed I was able to find these.

Hi Dave and welcome to DSK

I've found editing the contrast of scanned pics to be good to make them much clearer after scanning

Heaps of good info and advice in this place, enjoy mate
