Another Sandgroper

Post by shaihulud »

Hi my name is Richard.

Here and elsewhere, my handle is shaihulud which is the name given by Frank Herbert to the giant sandworms of Arrakis or Dune the desert planet in his Dune series of sc-fi novels. Shaihulud is also called The Old Man of the Desert. I believe that it is an Arabic word meaning "a thing of eternity."

I've been an aircooled VW nut since my second car in 1962 which was a 1958 big rear window Beetle. My factory trained mechanic said that it was the best Beetle ever made, until then, as it had the Australian body and the German engine and transmission.

I've owned and restored a Fibre Tech Glitterbug, which I thought was a Meyers Manx when I bought it in Wollongong. I drove it to Perth and then after restoration, I drove it up the Great Central Road to Alice Springs and back to Perth via the Nullarbor.

I've nearly finished the rebuilding of the only Meyers Manx SR known to be in the Southern Hemisphere.

I've never owned a Kombi, but I've driven lots of them and I hope that my next project will be a Kombi.

I have a plan which involves considerable modifications. I promise that what I will do, I will not do to a Splitty. That would be sacrilege. If I did you would drum me out of here. I'll do it to a Bay that needs some work. I promise. Cross my heart.

I love Splitties and one day I hope to have one.

I have some Splitty stories to tell, but I'll do that later.
