I don't know the NSW laws that well. Fact is I don't know the Aussie laws that well.

I am thinking about putting in the original 1600SP and fitting the kombi back together to get a blue slip and Rego.
OR... should I do all the other work I have planned
New engine
IRS
Disc brakes etc... Before I get a Blue slip/Rego

I'm getting the dc blue slipped prior to doing red nine and engine mods. Should just make life a little bit easier

It all depends, are you going to engineer the IRS and disc brakes or do what others do and not bother? If getting it engineered may as well do all your mods now and get them all engineered in one go. If not going down the engineering route it all depends on your blue slipper. If they know VWs then they probably won't pass it, if they aren't into VWs then they prob wont notice depending on type of brakes and other mods you use

Just know that if you have mods that require engineering and dont , Its possible ( and likely if they are on the ball ) that insurance will be null and void if you dont engineer.
And you know what cants insurers are.

I would get it regoed first all stock then mod it later on then you can always get it engineered when you have the $$ cause they charge big time

That red nine front end will be interesting if you try and get it passed.

If you have a red 9 front end and no engeneering and write your Konbi off then you could end up with zilch.
Insurance companies pay people to go over wrecks and find any way to weasel out that is possible.
Unengineered suspension mods in the form of a red 9 will stick out like dogs balls.
Its only a matter of time before someone is caught out.

An IRS conversion MIGHT slip under the radar ?
All that red paint ond shinny stuff on a red nine??? Not much chance.

For my piece of mind I would need su8ch mods engineered.

My last point was a red 9 will not pass engineers full stop because of the track is narrowed. I looked in to it in Melbourne and its a no go. Not sure about other states.

Red 9 front can be engineered in Qld and NSW , pretty sure Al does them all the time. And I'm pretty sure Doc's Red9 is engineered in Victoria.

I see your points.

I plan on upgrading to the following in the next few months.
2lt Type 4 engine conversion.
Exhaust to match
Super bug AH gear box.
Creative Engineering IRS (which will drop the back 3.5")
Creative Engineering rack and pinion steering.
Beam adjusters on the front.
Flipping the spindles (Dropping the front to match the back)
CSP slotted disk brakes all round.
Bilstein adjustable shocks all round.

For my own piece of mind.. Why skip getting it engineered after spending some much time and energy. Only to be refused a payout should anything untoward happen. Doesn't add up does it?

When I looked into buying one and that wasn't that long ago was told they cant be passed yet(Adr's not tested in aust) Doc's is a no.
Have a read of the vic road mod rules (no car can have the tracks narrowed) And the red nine is 25mm shorter. My father in law is a auto engineer and said the same thing playing with the track is a big no no.
I would go spending big $$ on this before doing your home work.
I'd be the first to put one on my bus if I could get it done.

May be Al can chime in on this for Qld??

As you are only talking normal mods and not Red 9 I would say yes. Definitely get them engineered.
engineers can be very expensive. But if you find the right one then you will be fine.
I have a fella un QLD that I was given the name of. He quoted me $120 for - Seat Belts , IRS , Turbo Motor , Disk Brake Front End.
Another one quoted me $150 per item.
