Re: Hello all. From Brisbane
Hubby said we will see how we go after we fix all the rust. On the rear tailgate and side pannels theres holes and rust everywhere, so we are wondering how different it will look with the rust repaired but keeping the OG paint.
So for now, one step at a time. But my hopes are all for stripping it back to the blue and trying to keep it as neat and ratty as possible, without it looking too awkward. But hubby might change his mind, seen as he has a few ideas he wants aswell. Gotta compromise.
More then welcome to come take a gander at it and share some ideas. =D
Thanks Leroy! There seems to be a few of us. A few more than I expected. So great =D

I reckon a good start ( and very very cheap to do ) is getting it back to OG paint to see what you have.
Next time you are in Woolies or Coles buy a few cans of Easy off oven Cleaner, its about $3 a can.
Push the old Yoot out into the sun and let the metal get hot, have your gurney or hosepipe on standby, wear a mask, gloves and glasses, long sleeved shirt, long trousers and no flip flops ...psray onto a small area, leave it for a minute or maybe 2 til it sort of fizzes and then rinse it off with plenty of water...after you've sprayed it, leave it and then try gently wiping it away, if you see Blue when you wipe..Bingo ! Wash it off ASAP.
Don't get this stuff on your skin...it hurts, trust me. It works a treat...

Welcome Daisy,
It'd be great to see it back in Dove Blue. Mines a '56.....close to a '55.
Patina is great, and IMHO, brings more character to the ute.

Oh wow! That looks amazing! I really like it.
Did yours come with any rust holes/broken bits? If so, how did you fix them to still look like that?
Heres some picks of the tricky rust spots I was talking about.
The rust has broken through all the way alone the bottom and top of the rear tailgate.
and a few more of these around it, this ones lower passenger door frame.
Took heaps of pictures with the camera today but can't get them onto the computer. Will post more indepth ones when theres daylight :p

Looks typical of the rust you'll find...the treasure chest is a joy to repair...

Wow! Looks great! Looks in so much better condition then ours =(. Such nice VW's on here, thats for sure.
Love the hubs! We have a set that had total gutter rash and dents all over them we got from a garage sale.
PS. What have you and John done with the interior for the floor and door panels and seats?

Re: Hello all. From Brisbane
Daisy, thay all have rust in them. I thought that mine was rust free when I brought her home. After hitting it with the high pressure washer to clean the mud that was caked underneath, the metal was disappearing before my eyes.
My sills, and dog legs had to be replaced. Floor was ok.
I only have the seat in there at the moment....no door cards yet.
As found......It was on the edge of a creek bed that flooded every winter. I am surprised that there was not more rust.

Re: Hello all. From Brisbane
John, you did such a great job with that Yoot...I never saw the before pics...hats off to you !
Daisy, as for interior, mines all original. My cab floor needed a couple of repair sections that were made up and welded in, all the repairs on my yoot were typical split screen repairs as John has already mentioned.
Inner and outer sills, jacking points, outriggers, below the fuel tank, battery tray, sections on treasure chest and a couple of sections on the cab floor.
Have a search in members rides for a resto of a 55 yoot done by Frankencab on here...in fact have a look at anything Klaus ( Frankencab ) restored and brought back ...another great thread and another local ish 55 is a build by Resinmonkey....another 55 , not long been found and stripped back to its go paint is a PG/SG ( palm green / sand green ) bus by Dion (search for 55 Pg Sg ) user name is Dtrain....some nice light bed time reading to be had amongst that lot....and if you want to see a real resurrection of an early bus search for the 54 field cart build by Bish.... that is some build right there !

Re: Hello all. From Brisbane
Okay, some daylight pics.
Front (Obviously )
Dented front bit. Shouldn't be toooo hard to fix.
Rear Tailgate.
Treasure Chest
Looking inside it.
Drivers side panel along the bottom tray
And.. the cab floor.
That, along with the whole top of the tray which is completely rusted is basically the worst bits. (so far )

Re: Hello all. From Brisbane
So I'm guessing the top tray off and do all the repairs in the treasure chest and then work your way up to the top tray and then the usual bottom 6 " all round.
Lots of lovely Dove Blue still showing through in that cab ha ha

Re: Hello all. From Brisbane
Yep. Ripping the whole top of the tray out and the bottom in the treasure area. Because theres no way that can be saved. Then on repairs to the gates and panels.
Inside the cab is very nice. I don't know why anyone would paint over the lovely blue. haha.
