Zimblewinder wrote:Hi Markus, the original formula was for Glasurit or Standox paints so there's the lower price option (not by much though). I intend to use Glasurit and tint to the inside of the petrol filler flap (which is cherry). The biggest problem with SWR is not necessarily the initial colour cos it can be matched quite well to OG un-damaged paint. The problem as Ive heard it is that the non-original formulas, PPG, Sikkens etc. all fade differently to the original formulas. Consequently they may appear pinker or darker or oranger as they age than OG formula paints. If you start with the OG formula and only a little tinting as required it is more likely to fade closer in colour to the way OG paint does than other makes formulas. Of course this all goes out the window because lead formulas are not possible anymore but this is what alot of restorers are betting on in the states. Ive seen some pretty interesting photos of SWR busses lined up at shows. So many variations of that colour. One other thing that counts too is the primer colour. Dark primer adds depth to reds while white/light grey brings out pink and orange hues. Im going for black primer as the OG grey primer was quite a blue grey and its likely to lead to a deeper finish.
Quite a challenge anyway...Good luck, let us know which formula and primer you go with and how much tinting you required. Looking forward to seeing your bus someday
Cheers

Thanks for the detailed response, Dale. Yes, my research about SWR matches all the points you raised above - that although expensive, Glasurit is best because other brands have all faded at different (faster) rates to different (unpleasant) shades. An important point you raised also; current 'expert' restorers can't know how modern paint will fade or look in say, 10 years because it's not the same (lead) paint VW used 50 odd years ago! It took me a while to come around to Sealing Wax Red as a colour in the first place. I'm generally not a fan of pinks, apricots, oranges, etc for car paint! I now love the look of SWR but not if it fades badly to some garish pink or apricot!!
That's a great tip about the primer! I hadn't come across that before but it makes sense. I will ask my brother about using a darker primer.....

Warb & Cappo, yeah that would be a lot easier and less expensive!!!
I don't really like 'rusty' rat but I do like OG paint faded nicely if it covers most of the Kombi fairly consistently. A good example is the '61 that just sold with the great documented history below...
But if the paint is really patchy, splotchy and inconsistent like mine then I'm not such a fan....
Mine also has a donor front clip & Driver's door (primed) that will look shitty IMO if left as is....
Nice OG paint - love it! Crusty, rusty not my cup of tea but each to their own....

BTW, I fixed the link to the KCW thread it wasn't working before....
the link takes you to page 11 of the thread where you can see John Johns (well, one of his staff) comparing the nose of his clients 23 to his BD 23! Also, go to page 14 where JJ even goes to the extent of spraying a test patch on is OG BD Samba!!! to try and get the 'shade' his client wants. Man, that is above and beyond....
If you have time, it's a great resto thread of the client's '58 23, but for you rat, OG & lowered lovers and fans of Barn Door's - there's some nice shots of JJ's OG BD 23 winda! This thread is from 2007 but that thing must be worth a shit load in today's prices....
It's 50 pages, skim through it's worth it.......

go to local paint supply shop in unanderra and get a pressure pack mixed up , then you will know how close the local guys can mix it and get the primer covered up for now , spray factory colour primer first then orig colour overtop and sand thru to match the rest of the bus ,

Yes, I would consider the stressed look but my wife has veto powers
She doesn't get the rat, faded OG or stressed look at all
Klaus, that is a great idea but if I'm going to get my brother to respray shiny then I'm better off waiting. It will all be rubbed back anyway. It ain't gonna cost me much - family rates which is why I can probably afford better quality paint...
And as you all know, you only get a great paint job with great prep work. That's where my brother excels, he's old school and knows how to rub and rub hard by hand. He started his spray painting apprenticeship back in 1969 at the age of 15 - back when cars were still made from real metal and panel beaters actually did beat metal (not just replace panels). I'd be mad not to take advantage of his skills. I don't think he's ever sprayed a 'stressed' look before though Again, like my wife he doesn't get it....

is going for paint straight away or are u driving it for a bit first , as paint will take a few months even for family as you wil want to rip it completely apart inside n out to do it, as well as engine/ box out and on a rotiseree to do underside too .
Then when its painted u wont want to drive it incase it gets scratched n dented so it will sit in the shed and then u will buy a scruffy og paint bus to drive daily or a commodore
Defo be blueslipping and driving it asap! The whole hog paint resto won't be happening. Inside needs minimal new paint - because most of it will be covered with trim panels and head liner (eventually) and the OG is fine. Underneath, will be done by me lying on my back, slowly sanding and cleaning and then hand painting a protective coating. Not looking forward to it.... unless someone wants to lend me a rotisserie?!?
Yes, once the outside is shiny, bling new paint I probably will be worried about every scratch and car park scrape but I won't let that stop me driving it as often as possible. I'm no collector or show car guy! I believe a Kombi needs to be driven......
Inside is already pretty much stripped... just gotta pop all the windows out again (they all have fresh new rubber) and remove OG front bench seat and steering wheel, speedo, etc.

cool , for underside I'd paint same as body colour as many a bus Ive had to strip/scrap as water has been caught between underbody sealant and og paint , and the busses that have survived have only been painted not undersealed

OK, paint only underneath it is.....
Hey Graeme, that Sunburnt Orange does look similar to SWR. I'm gonna stick with the original SWR/BG combo to keep it original..... thanks for the links. Are you thinking of painting your whole Split with it or going 2 tone?

Yeah - i kind of like the idea of an original colour too... if someone had the magical paint code that was an exact match i'd use it.. mine is a fair way off paint but i would like to do it two tone as well...once you work out the magic paint code i'll steal it from you
